About Jay

My name is Jay Eads and I have been many things in my life from a mail clerk, to a pharmaceutical representative and business leader, to a teacher and a school administrator. Above all though I take my greatest joy in being married to my wife Lynda for the last 38 years and in the lives of my two adult children and my two grandchildren. I enjoy many pastimes from watercolor painting, sketching, photography AND astronomy as well as hiking and drives to various parts of the country. You may say that I love life and being engaged in this journey of life. 


In all of this I enjoy engaging and learning of others and their journey though this thing we each call life. Each of us has a journey and we share, I believe, more in common than not. 


I was born in Portland Oregon and grew up in the east bay of the SF Bay area in Livermore, California. I moved to Utah in 1993 being transferred here for my job. I am semi retired now, and spend my time pursuing my interests and hobbies, volunteering in my faith community and sharing my love of the night sky with others.

  • Who leads the tours and workshops?

    Every experience is led by Jay himself. There's no rotation of guides, no staff handoffs, and no surprises. When you book with Eadsy Astronomy, you get Jay, an experienced astronomer who has spent more than 25 years exploring the night skies of Utah and helping others do the same.


  • Do I need any astronomy experience to book a session?

    Not at all. Whether you've never looked through a telescope or you already own one and want to level up, there's a session designed for you. Jay adapts every experience to your knowledge level, your goals, and your pace. Beginners are always welcome, and no prior knowledge is required.


  • Where are sessions held?

    Sessions are held across the Wasatch Front and surrounding areas. Depending on the experience you book, locations range from accessible dark sky spots close to Salt Lake City to remote sites with sky quality ratings above 21.7 MPAS (some of the darkest skies in the country). Jay works with you in advance to choose a location that fits your goals and schedule.


  • Can I bring my own telescope?

    Absolutely. Bringing your own equipment is always an option, and it can reduce the overall cost of your session. Jay is happy to act as your guide to a dark site location and help you get the most out of your own gear. If you don't have equipment, professional-grade telescopes are provided.


  • Is there a minimum group size?

    No minimum, but sessions are intentionally kept small. For Educational Workshops, groups are typically two to four people. This keeps the experience personal and makes sure every participant gets real attention. Larger private events can be arranged, so just reach out and Jay will find something that works.


  • What should I bring?

    Dress in layers, temperatures drop significantly after sunset, even in summer, especially at elevation. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are a must for uneven terrain. Bring water, a small snack, and a red-light flashlight if you have one (red light preserves your night vision). Jay handles everything else.


  • What if I've never used a telescope before?

     That's exactly who the Stargazing Workshop is designed for. You'll get hands-on time with professional equipment, clear guidance on how everything works, and a patient, unhurried session that lets you figure things out at your own pace. Many participants leave feeling completely confident about what to buy and how to use it.

  • Can out-of-state visitors book a session?

    Yes, and Jay has hosted many out-of-state visitors over the years, including those who flew into Salt Lake City specifically for the experience. He can recommend lodging, help plan your itinerary around clear-sky forecasts, and arrange nightly outings during your stay. Just reach out with your travel dates and he'll help make it work.


  • What happens if the weather is bad or skies are cloudy?

    Cloud cover happens, especially in Utah's shoulder seasons. If skies are forecast to be unworkable on your scheduled night, Jay will reach out in advance to reschedule. He monitors weather closely and plans accordingly, so you won't show up to a cloudy sky without warning.

  • What is a dark sky site, and why does it matter?

    A dark sky site is a location far enough from city lights that the natural darkness of the sky is preserved. Light pollution from urban areas washes out the fainter objects in the sky, making it impossible to see most of what's up there. At a true dark sky site, the number of stars visible to the naked eye goes from a few dozen to literally thousands. It's the difference between glancing at the sky and actually experiencing it.
